Wind Cave National Park Alerts and Current Conditions
Last checked: October 25, 2026. This page tracks what's closed, what's changed, and what's coming up at Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota, from the park's alerts, news releases, and hours pages. I check it daily and rewrite it when the park posts something new. Cave tour times change with the season, and the park says winter storms can close its roads for a while, so check the park's own alerts the morning you go.
Current alerts
- The Natural Entrance Tour is closed for the season. The route closed October 1 and stays closed through the winter. The Garden of Eden, Fairgrounds, and Accessibility tour routes are still offered. (NPS)
- Cards only. Cave tours, campground fees, and interagency passes are paid by credit card, debit card, or digital payment. The park doesn't take cash or checks.
- No overnight parking at the Centennial Trailhead without a camping permit. The park doesn't issue permits just for parking. Through-hikers on the Centennial Trail can use shuttles in the Black Hills.
- Fall programs. In a September 2 release, the park announced daily cave tours this fall and ranger-led elk bugling programs on select evenings in September and October. With October nearly over, call to ask whether any bugling programs are left. (NPS)
Open and closed right now
- The park is open all day, every day, though snow or severe weather can limit access to some areas, especially in winter. The park doesn't list an entrance fee; cave tours are paid separately. (NPS)
- Wind Cave Visitor Center: open daily, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Mountain Time), on its late-fall-through-early-spring schedule. Cave tours start here; tour times vary by season, so call to confirm.
- Elk Mountain Campground: open year-round, with sites reservable on Recreation.gov. The park says drinking water and flush toilets run from late spring into early fall, and fees are half price when the water is off, so ask whether it's on before you count on it.
Coming up in the next few weeks
- Thursday, November 26: the visitor center is closed for Thanksgiving. It also closes Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
- Winter weather: the park says winter storms often bring snow and occasionally close park roads for a short time.
- Later changes: visitor center hours stretch to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from April 25, 2027. The Natural Entrance Tour is closed for the winter season; the park hasn't posted its reopening date.
What this means for your trip
If the Natural Entrance Tour was the one you had in mind, it's closed through the winter. You can still go underground on the Garden of Eden, Fairgrounds, or Accessibility routes, so the cave itself is very much on. Tour times change through the year, so call (605) 745-4600 before you build a day around a particular one.
Above ground, the prairie and pine hills stay open around the clock, and late fall can bring warm, dry days and cool evenings, by the park's own description. Once snow comes, roads in the park's remote corners can close temporarily. Inside the cave it's 54°F all year, so bring a layer whatever the weather outside.
If you're camping, Elk Mountain is the park's only campground, and it stays open all winter. Plan to bring your own water unless the park confirms it's on, and have a card ready.
Before you go
- Check the park's current conditions and alerts the morning of your visit.
- For tour times and current road and trail conditions, call the visitor center at (605) 745-4600.
- Check road conditions on your route before you drive to the park, as the park recommends.
- Reserve campsites at Elk Mountain through Recreation.gov.
