Shenandoah National Park Alerts and Current Conditions
Last checked: October 25, 2026. This page tracks what's closed, what's changed, and what's coming up at Shenandoah National Park, Virginia, from the park's alerts, news releases, and hours pages. I check it daily and rewrite it when the park posts something new. Most of the park's lodges, waysides, and campgrounds close between now and late November, and bad weather can close parts of Skyline Drive, so check the park's own alerts the morning you go.
Current alerts
- The park's emergency phone line is down. The usual emergency number, 1-800-732-0911, isn't working. For any emergency in the park, dial 911. (NPS)
- Naked Creek backcountry zone is closed. After recent wildlife interactions, the park has closed the zone to all recreation until further notice. Camping is also closed on the Appalachian Trail from Lewis Mountain to Big Meadows, including the Bearfence AT Hut, though you can still day-hike that stretch. (NPS)
- Old Rag's main parking lot is closed for construction, with work expected to finish in November 2026. Use the existing overflow lots. You still need an Old Rag day-use ticket through November 30, plus a park entrance pass. (NPS)
- Traffic safety checkpoints through November 15. The park is running a high-visibility traffic safety and sobriety campaign, with periodic checkpoints, through Sunday, November 15. (NPS)
- Cashless entrance stations. Fee stations take only credit cards, debit cards, or mobile payments. (NPS)
- Park legally at boundary trailheads. Cars parked outside designated areas can be towed. Approaching Thompson Hollow, park on the right side of the road, and only up to the "No Parking" sign before a private driveway. (NPS)
Open and closed right now
- The park is always open, though parts of Skyline Drive close at times in bad weather. You can still enter on foot to hike when the drive is closed. Entrance is $30 per private vehicle, good for seven consecutive days. (NPS)
- Visitor centers: Dickey Ridge (mile 4.6) and Byrd (mile 51) are both open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Both close when Skyline Drive closes for severe weather.
- Campgrounds: Mathews Arm, Big Meadows, Lewis Mountain, and Loft Mountain are all within their 2026 seasons. Big Meadows is reservation-only, Lewis Mountain is first come, first served, and the other two take both.
- Lodging and food: Skyland, Big Meadows Lodge, Big Meadows Wayside, Elkwallow Wayside, Loft Mountain Wayside, the Loft Mountain Campstore, and the Lewis Mountain campstore are within their 2026 seasons. The Lewis Mountain cabins are closed for the season. Skyland Stables' last day is today, October 25. Concession hours vary.
- Picnic grounds are open year-round. South River and Dundo have no water, and fires and grills aren't allowed there.
Coming up in the next few weeks
- Sunday, November 1: last day for Mathews Arm and Loft Mountain campgrounds and the Loft Mountain Campstore.
- Sunday, November 8: last day for Skyland, Elkwallow Wayside, Loft Mountain Wayside, and the Lewis Mountain campstore.
- Sunday, November 15: the traffic safety campaign ends.
- Sunday, November 22: last day for Lewis Mountain Campground.
- Thursday, November 26: both visitor centers are closed for Thanksgiving.
- Sunday, November 29: last day for Big Meadows Campground, Big Meadows Lodge, and Big Meadows Wayside. The park's 2026 schedule also lists November 29 as the closing date for the Byrd Visitor Center. Dickey Ridge stays open year-round.
- Monday, November 30: the last day an Old Rag day-use ticket is required this season.
- After December 1: Lewis Mountain Picnic Grounds close to vehicles. Big Meadows and Lewis Mountain campgrounds are listed as closed until March 25, 2027.
What this means for your trip
Shenandoah winds down in stages, so the date matters more than usual. Through November 1, you can still camp at either end of the park. After that, camping moves to the middle, at Big Meadows and Lewis Mountain, until those close too. If you want a room on the ridge, Skyland's season ends November 8 and Big Meadows Lodge's on November 29. Only one gas station operates inside the park, at Big Meadows Wayside, so fill up before you drive Skyline.
The Naked Creek closure applies to everyone, day hikers included. The AT camping ban mostly affects backpackers, since you can still day-hike the trail between Lewis Mountain and Big Meadows. Old Rag hikers should allow extra time for the overflow lots and have their day-use ticket ready.
Save the emergency number change in your phone: dial 911, not the park's usual line. Late fall on the ridge means short days and a better chance of bad weather closing parts of Skyline Drive. Sign up for the park's text alerts so you know before you drive up.
