Saguaro National Park Alerts and Current Conditions

Cover of Brian Russ's guide to Saguaro National Park

Last checked: October 25, 2026. This page tracks what's closed, what's changed, and what's coming up at Saguaro National Park, Arizona, from the park's alerts, conditions, and hours pages for both districts. I check it daily and rewrite it when the park posts something new. Flash flooding has already closed the west district's scenic drive this year, and a single storm can change things again, so check the park's own alerts the morning you go.

Current alerts

  • Bajada Loop Drive is closed in the Tucson Mountain District (west). Flash flooding damaged the road, and the closure covers all of Hohokam Road and Golden Gate Road. It lifts when the road is repaired, the area is safe, and the signs come down. (NPS)
  • Kinney Road is closed through Tuesday, November 24, from the eastern intersection of McCain Loop to the Desert Museum. Use McCain Loop instead. (NPS)
  • Vehicle break-ins at trailheads. They've happened at the King Canyon Trailhead and at other trailheads in the park. Hide valuables or take them with you, lock up, and report anything suspicious: 911 for crimes in progress, or the Pima County Sheriff's non-emergency line at 520-351-4900.
  • RV and trailer limits. The loop drives in both districts take vehicles up to 40 feet in total length. The west district has RV parking at its visitor center; the east district doesn't. The park expects heavier traffic as the busy season ramps up.
  • Rideshare warning for the west side. Drivers will drop you at the park but usually won't pick you up, so arrange a round trip before you go. No major trails start at the visitor center.

Open and closed right now

  • The park is always open except in emergencies, and you can walk or bike in any time. Entrance is $25 per private vehicle, or $15 per person 16 and older on foot, bike, or horseback. (NPS)
  • Red Hills Visitor Center (west) and Rincon Mountain Visitor Center (east): both open daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., on their October-through-May schedule. Water is available at both.
  • Rincon Mountain District (east): all roads, picnic areas, restrooms, and trails are open, per the park's conditions page. Cactus Forest Loop Drive is open 5 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. (NPS)
  • Tucson Mountain District (west): the visitor center is open, but the Bajada Loop Drive is closed (see above). Separately, Golden Gate Road is permanently closed to vehicles between the Sendero Esperanza trailhead and Picture Rocks Road; that stretch is now a trail for hikers, bikes, and horses.
  • Camping: the park has no drive-in campgrounds. Its six backcountry camps in the Rincon Mountains (Douglas Spring, Grass Shack, Happy Valley Saddle, Juniper Basin, Manning Camp, and Spud Rock Spring) are hike-in only and are listed as open, by reservation.

Coming up in the next few weeks

  • Tuesday, November 24: the scheduled end of the Kinney Road closure.
  • Thanksgiving: both visitor centers are closed for the holiday. The park's hours listing gives the date as Wednesday, November 25, a day before Thanksgiving itself, so call ahead if you're visiting that week. Both are also closed Christmas Day.
  • No reopening date has been given for the Bajada Loop Drive.

What this means for your trip

If you're visiting the west side, the loop drive closure changes the whole day. Bajada Loop Drive is the west district's scenic drive, and it's closed with no reopening date. The Red Hills Visitor Center is open, and if you're coming in on Kinney Road, use McCain Loop around the closure. Just don't count on driving the loop. With the rideshare problem on top of that, the west side is a harder trip right now unless you have your own car and a trail in mind.

The east side is the easy call this fall. Every road and trail there is open, according to the park, and the eight-mile Cactus Forest Loop Drive runs from early morning into the evening. If you can only do one district, do the Rincon Mountain side.

Late fall is the comfortable season here. The park puts winter daytime highs in the low 50s to high 70s, so hiking at midday works again. Still, carry water, and lock valuables out of sight at the trailheads.

Before you go

  • Check the park's current conditions and alerts the morning of your visit.
  • Rincon Mountain Visitor Center: (520) 733-5153. Red Hills Visitor Center: (520) 733-5158.
  • Heading to the Miller Creek or Turkey Creek trailheads? Happy Valley Road has stream crossings in summer and winter, and the park strongly encourages high-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicles. Call the Rincon Mountain Visitor Center about current road conditions.
  • For backcountry camping at Manning Camp, call the Rincon Mountain Visitor Center about availability.
