Mesa Verde National Park Alerts and Current Conditions
Last checked: October 25, 2026. This page tracks what's closed, what's changed, and what's coming up at Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado, from the park's alerts, conditions, and hours pages. I check it daily and rewrite it when the park posts something new. The park sits between 7,000 and 8,500 feet, where snow is always possible in winter, and the park posts delayed openings and temporary closures on its conditions page, so check the park's own alerts the morning you go.
Current alerts
- Far View Sites and Cedar Tree Tower are closed for road work. Construction on their access roads has closed both roads to all traffic. (NPS)
- Delays on the Main Park Road. Road work on the first four miles of the Main Park Road began the week of September 20, and the park says to expect delays of up to 15 minutes. (NPS)
- Loose gravel on Wetherill Mesa Road. A 30-foot stretch has compacted gravel, and the park asks motorcyclists to take extra care. (NPS)
- Spruce Tree House remains closed because of rockfall danger, as it has been since 2015. You can see it from overlooks behind the Mesa Verde Museum. (NPS)
Open and closed right now
- The park is open daily, year-round, except in an emergency, and you don't need a reservation to enter. Ancestral sites, picnic areas, and trails are open 8 a.m. to sunset. Entrance is $30 per private vehicle, good for seven days. The park's fee list also shows a $20 private-vehicle rate without saying when it applies, so confirm at the entrance station. Digital passes are on Recreation.gov at no extra cost; print or save yours, since connectivity in the park is limited. (NPS)
- Mesa Verde Visitor and Research Center: open daily, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (NPS)
- Mesa Verde Museum: on fall hours, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. (NPS)
- Wetherill Mesa: closed for the season. Its 2026 season ran May 22 to October 21.
- Cliff dwelling tours: the park says the tour season runs mid-May through late October, so it's at its very end. Tours need a reservation on Recreation.gov, up to 14 days ahead.
- Morefield Campground: in its fall off-season camping period, listed through October 27. Reservations are accepted but not required, though the park highly recommends them for the 15 full-hookup RV sites. (NPS)
Coming up in the next few weeks
- Tuesday, October 27: last listed date of Morefield's fall off-season camping.
- Tuesday, November 3: Morefield Campground closes for the season. The park lists spring off-season camping from April 17, 2027.
- Thursday, November 26 (Thanksgiving): the Visitor and Research Center and the museum are closed. Both also close Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
- Through December 13: the museum keeps its 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. fall hours (the park's hours page lists them through December 31).
- Winter: the park says Far View Lodge, Morefield Campground, and most dining close in winter, and all activities depend on road, trail, and weather conditions.
What this means for your trip
This is the in-between week at Mesa Verde. Wetherill Mesa is shut for the year and the cliff dwelling tour season is ending, so most visits now come down to the Chapin Mesa side: the museum, the Spruce Tree House overlooks behind it, and the Mesa Top Loop, where you can see Cliff Palace from the Sun Temple stop. None of those is on the closure list. That's a good half day on your own, and the park offers a Mesa Top Loop audio tour you can download before you lose signal.
The road work matters mainly for the clock. Add 15 minutes each way for the Main Park Road, and cross Far View Sites and Cedar Tree Tower off the list until their roads reopen. With the sites open only from 8 a.m. to sunset and the museum closing at 3, start early.
Campers have a short window. Morefield is the only campground in the park, and it closes for the season November 3. After that, plan to stay outside the park, and be ready for snow on the mesa top.
Before you go
- Check the park's current conditions and alerts the morning of your visit, and ask the ranger at the entrance gate about roads and trails.
- Morefield Campground and lodging reservations: visitmesaverde.com or 1-800-449-2288.
- For a cliff dwelling tour, check Recreation.gov for any remaining dates; the park's homepage links the tour pages.
