Joshua Tree looks simple on a map, but the desert doesn't leave much margin. You won't find food, gas, or water for sale inside the park, cell service comes and goes, and the popular lots fill early on good-weather days.

So do the planning before you drive in. Pick your season first, because heat decides what a day here looks like, then choose a hike or two and stock the car. If you're bringing kids, that list is below, along with everything else I've written about the park.

When to Go

Month by month, with what's open and whether the trip is worth it.

Trails

How hard each hike is, how long it takes, and when to start.

Wildlife and Plants

Where and when to look. Nothing here is guaranteed, so treat a sighting as a bonus.

With Kids

What works with children, where to stay, and what to skip.

Day Trips

Drive times and routes from nearby cities.

Road Trips Through Joshua Tree

The Guide

When you're ready to plan the days themselves, my Joshua Tree guide has nine ready-made itineraries for one to three days at easy, moderate, and strenuous effort. You can read a sample from it first.
