Isle Royale National Park Alerts and Current Conditions

Cover of Brian Russ's guide to Isle Royale National Park

Last checked: October 25, 2026. This page tracks what's closed, what's changed, and what's coming up at Isle Royale National Park, Michigan, from the park's alerts, news releases, and hours pages. I check it daily and rewrite it when the park posts something new, so bookmark it rather than an old news story. The island closes for the winter on November 1, and Lake Superior's weather decides who gets on and off it, so check the park's own alerts before you go.

Current alerts

  • Tent camping is closed at four east-end campgrounds. Because of continued wolf activity and food storage problems, the park has closed the individual and group tent sites at Three Mile, Daisy Farm, Moskey Basin, and Caribou Island, and tents and hammocks aren't allowed anywhere in those campgrounds. Off-trail camping zones 10 through 13 and 30 through 38 are closed too. The shelters remain open. The closure started August 28 and runs until the park closes on October 31, and closed areas are patrolled. (NPS)
  • Food storage rules are in effect, and they're strict. Food, trash, scented items, cooking supplies and utensils, and fish or fish parts all have to be stored properly. At Three Mile and Rock Harbor, backpacks go in the backpack storage areas and food and scented items go in the food storage lockers, never in tents. The park updated these rules on April 16, 2026. (NPS)
  • Island Mine Campground's stream is barely flowing. Carry enough water to Island Mine or plan to collect it along your route. (NPS)
  • Harmful algal blooms in Lake Richie and Intermediate Lake. The park tests and monitors them and says toxin levels are consistently low. Don't filter water where you see surface scum, smell strong odors, or see other signs of a significant bloom. Filtering from relatively clear parts of the lake is low risk. (NPS)
  • No boat fuel through October 31, except in emergencies. Boaters should carry extra fuel in containers. (NPS)

Open and closed right now

  • The park is open through Saturday, October 31. Entrance is $7 per person per day, and children 15 and under are free. Visiting park headquarters in Houghton costs nothing. (NPS)
  • Transportation: the park lists its transportation services as running May through September, so don't count on a scheduled boat or plane this week.
  • Houghton Visitor Center: open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., through October 31. It's closed weekends and federal holidays. (NPS)
  • Rock Harbor and Windigo visitor centers: past their daily season, which ended September 19. The park lists them as open only intermittently now. For details, call the park at (906) 482-0984.
  • Campgrounds: all are listed as open through October 31, with individual sites first-come, first-served and group sites by advance reservation. Remember the tent closures at the four east-end campgrounds above.

Coming up in the next few weeks

  • Saturday, October 31: last day of the 2026 season. The fuel outage and the east-end tent closures both run until then.
  • Sunday, November 1: the island and the surrounding islands close to all visitors through April 15, 2027, for extreme winter weather. The closure extends 4.5 miles out into Lake Superior. The Houghton Visitor Center also closes until April 14, 2027.
  • Spring 2027: the park reopens on April 16, 2027. The Houghton Visitor Center reopens April 15 with spring hours, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Transportation services are listed for May through September.

What this means for your trip

For almost everyone, the 2026 season is done. With scheduled transportation listed only through September and the island closing November 1, this page is mostly useful for planning next year. If you're already on the island, or arriving by your own boat this week, the details below matter.

Backpackers on the east end can't pitch a tent at Three Mile, Daisy Farm, Moskey Basin, or Caribou Island. You can use a shelter there if one is free. Otherwise, plan your days so you finish at a campground that isn't on the closure list. Rock Harbor is the one most people pass through, and it isn't on it. Fill up on water before Island Mine, and choose clear spots to filter at Lake Richie and Intermediate Lake. Boaters, bring your own fuel.

For 2027, learn the food storage rules before you pack. Campgrounds closed three separate times in 2026 (Three Mile in July, Duncan Narrows in July, and the four east-end campgrounds from August 28), and the park tied the last two directly to wolves and improperly stored food. The easiest way to keep a campground open is to keep everything scented in the locker.
