Denali National Park and Preserve Alerts and Current Conditions

Cover of Brian Russ's guide to Denali National Park and Preserve

Last checked: October 25, 2026. This page tracks what's closed, what's changed, and what's coming up at Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska, from the park's alerts, news releases, conditions, and hours pages. I check it daily and rewrite it when the park posts something new. Winter has arrived on the park road, and snow decides how far you can drive from one day to the next, so check the park's own alerts the morning you go.

Current alerts

  • The Denali Park Road is open to vehicles only as far as Mile 3, Park Headquarters. Snow beyond that point stops vehicle travel, though you can still go farther on foot. (NPS)
  • Fuels-reduction work near the park entrance this fall. The park and the U.S. Wildland Fire Service announced on September 30 that they're continuing work near the entrance area to cut wildfire risk around buildings, infrastructure, and public-use areas. (NPS)
  • Full bus service returns for summer 2027. The Pretty Rocks Bridge was completed in September, restoring the route to the west end of the park road, which has been cut off since the Pretty Rocks landslide in August 2021. The park says bus service along the full road will resume in 2027. (NPS)
  • Higher vehicle limit on the restricted part of the road. A final rule announced October 15 allows up to 160 vehicles a day on the restricted section of the park road during the visitor season, matching the park's 2012 Vehicle Management Plan. It matters for summer planning, not this winter. (NPS)

Open and closed right now

  • The park is open 24 hours a day with no entrance gate, but services are limited after hours (generally after 4 p.m. in winter). Entrance is $15 per person age 16 and older, good for seven days; 15 and younger get in free. Pay online or at the entrance area with a card; the park doesn't take cash. (NPS)
  • Murie Science and Learning Center (the winter visitor center): open daily, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., for the winter season. Get backcountry permits there. The heated Indoor Picnic Area next door is open daily 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with no staff on site. (NPS)
  • Closed for the season: the Denali Visitor Center, the Denali Bus Depot, and the Walter Harper Talkeetna Ranger Station. The Eielson Visitor Center is closed because of the Pretty Rocks landslide.
  • Camping: Riley Creek Campground, at Mile 0.25, is open all year and free outside summer, with only one loop open in fall, winter, and spring. No reservations are needed in winter. Savage River, Sanctuary River, Teklanika River, and Igloo Creek are closed for the winter, and Wonder Lake is closed until further notice. Camping anywhere else takes a free backpacking permit.
  • Lodging: the park says there are no NPS-run hotels in Denali and suggests the local Chamber of Commerce for lodging help. (NPS)

Coming up in the next few weeks

  • Thursday, November 26: the Murie Science and Learning Center and the Indoor Picnic Area are closed for Thanksgiving. Both also close Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
  • Tuesday, December 1: bus and campground reservations for summer 2027 open. (NPS)
  • Winter road plan: the park says the road is plowed to Park Headquarters for most of the winter, until mid-February, when it typically opens to Mountain Vista (Mile 13).
  • Later reopenings: the Talkeetna Ranger Station is listed as closed through January 18, 2027. The Denali Visitor Center reopens May 1, 2027, and the bus depot and the summer-only campgrounds on May 20, 2027.

What this means for your trip

A late-fall or winter trip to Denali is a different trip from the summer one in most guidebooks. There are no buses, the road stops at Mile 3, and the big visitor center is closed. Your base is the Murie Science and Learning Center, and the park road past headquarters is for walking, skiing, or snowshoeing, not driving. If you'd planned the drive to Savage River or Teklanika, that's off until spring.

The park's own hours page says it plainly: winter brings extreme cold, as low as 40 below, and on the winter solstice the sun is up for less than four and a half hours. Plan short days that start late and end early, and carry real winter gear even for a walk from headquarters. The visitor center closes at 5, and services thin out after 4.

If you're planning summer 2027, the news is good: full-length bus service is coming back, and with it the west end of the road. Put December 1 on your calendar, because that's when bus and campground reservations open.

Before you go

  • Check the park's current conditions and alerts the morning of your visit. The park says that page overrides any other trip-planning information on its site.
  • Ask at the visitor center about wildlife closures before you hike. Some short closures, under 24 hours, may not show on the park's map.
  • Summer bus and campground reservations, once they open, go through ReserveDenali.com; group sites are booked at 800-622-7275.

If a closure knocks out part of your plan, my guide to Denali National Park and Preserve has nine one- to three-day itineraries at easy, moderate, and strenuous effort, each with a backup plan for weather or closures. You can also check alerts and conditions for every national park.
