Channel Islands National Park Alerts and Current Conditions
Last checked: October 25, 2026. This page tracks what's closed, what's changed, and what's coming up at Channel Islands National Park, California, from the park's alerts, news releases, conditions, and hours pages. I check it daily and rewrite it when the park posts something new, so bookmark it rather than an old news story. Getting to the islands depends on boats, landings, and ocean conditions, so check the park's own alerts the morning you go.
Current alerts
- Parts of Santa Rosa Island are still closed after the 2026 wildfire. The burned areas remain closed during recovery. The park reopened the island to day use on July 1, and it reopened Water Canyon Campground on October 14. (NPS)
- Santa Rosa backcountry beach camping is partly back. Designated beach camping areas in the northwest and southwest quadrants reopened October 14. The southeast quadrant stays closed to backcountry camping, with no permits, for the rest of the 2026 season. (NPS)
- Santa Barbara Island's dock is closed. The island is open, but landings are limited to the rocky ledge next to the dock, and the park doesn't expect the dock to be repaired soon. (NPS)
- Standing closures on Santa Rosa. The coastline around Sandy Point is closed year-round to protect seal rookeries, and the beaches and dunes from China Camp to Cluster Point are closed except on marked paths. (NPS)
- What you can't bring to any island: pets or other animals (service animals only by the superintendent's permit), bicycles, motorized vehicles, plants, soil, cut flowers, firewood or untreated wood (hiking sticks included), corrugated boxes, and single-use plastic grocery bags. The rules keep invasive species off the islands. (NPS)
Open and closed right now
- The park is open 24 hours a day, every day, and charges no entrance fee. Camping costs a reservation fee per site per night. (NPS)
- Channel Islands National Park Visitor Center (the Robert J. Lagomarsino visitor center on the mainland): open daily, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Outdoors Santa Barbara Visitor Center: 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The park's listings disagree on the days (one says daily, another Thursday through Sunday), so confirm before you make a special trip.
- Island contact stations on Anacapa, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz (Scorpion Ranch), and Santa Rosa list 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The San Miguel Island ranger station is open only when staff are there.
- Camping: all island camping needs an advance reservation. Anacapa, Scorpion Canyon, Del Norte Backcountry, Santa Barbara Island, and Water Canyon on Santa Rosa are listed as open year-round. San Miguel Island Campground is closed through the end of 2026. The park opened a new Prisoners Harbor Campground on Santa Cruz Island on August 27, 2026. (NPS)
Coming up in the next few weeks
- Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26: both mainland visitor centers close. Outdoors Santa Barbara also closes December 25 and January 1; the park's main visitor center closes December 25.
- January 1 through August 14, 2027: Santa Rosa Island's backcountry beach camping closes to protect pupping seals and sea lions and nesting seabirds. Late fall and December are the last chance this season. (Recreation.gov)
What this means for your trip
For most day visitors, nothing on the list changes the classic trips. Anacapa and Santa Cruz aren't on the closure list, and their campgrounds are listed as open. If your plan was Santa Rosa, you can go again, for the day or overnight at Water Canyon, but stay out of the burned areas and expect to see fire damage. The park's early assessment is that most of the island's rare Torrey pines may die, so the grove won't look the way older photos show it.
Kayakers and backpackers planning beach camping on Santa Rosa should pick the northwest or southwest quadrant. The southeast beaches, which are usually the first to open, are closed for the rest of the year.
If Santa Barbara Island is on your list, the ledge landing is the only way ashore, and it's harder than stepping onto a dock. Crossings depend on the ocean, and late-fall days are short, so build a spare day into any overnight trip in case a boat doesn't run.
Before you go
- Check the park's current conditions and alerts the morning of your visit.
- Read the Santa Rosa Island fire recovery page for details on what's closed before any Santa Rosa trip.
- Reserve island campsites through Recreation.gov or by phone at 877-444-6777.
