Canyonlands National Park Alerts and Current Conditions
Last checked: October 25, 2026. This page tracks what's closed, what's changed, and what's coming up at Canyonlands National Park, Utah, from the park's alerts, conditions, and hours pages. I check it daily and rewrite it when the park posts something new. Rain and snow can turn the park's unpaved roads impassable in a day, so check the park's own alerts the morning you go, especially if you're headed down a dirt road.
Current alerts
- Mineral Bottom Road and the White Rim Road are open but not recommended. Rain has left the Mineral Bottom switchbacks and the west side of the White Rim Road slippery and muddy. The park says they're passable, but it advises against driving them until they dry out. (NPS)
- Expect lines and full lots. The park warns of possibly long waits at the entrance station. If an overlook or trailhead lot is full, it asks you to come back later rather than parking on vegetation or the roadway. (NPS)
- The Grand View Point weekday closures are over. The parking lot project closed the area early in the week from late July through October 1, 2026. That window has passed, and the park isn't listing a current closure there. (NPS)
Open and closed right now
- The park is generally open 24 hours a day, year-round. Entrance is $30 per private vehicle; the park lists $25 for a motorcycle (good for seven days) and $15 per person on foot or bike, with youth 15 and under free. (NPS)
- Island in the Sky Visitor Center: open daily, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., on late-fall hours that start today.
- The Needles Visitor Center: open daily, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The park says its bathrooms stay open and water is available year-round, even when the building is closed.
- Hans Flat Ranger Station (the Maze): open daily, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Backcountry office: on its fall-through-spring schedule, Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Monday and Tuesday. Rangers take questions by phone or email and issue permits online, with no permits after 4 p.m.
- Camping: Island in the Sky (Willow Flat) Campground is open year-round, first-come, first-served only, with 12 sites. The Needles Campground is open; Loop A is first-come, first-served, and Loop B takes reservations for nights through November 15. (NPS)
Coming up in the next few weeks
- After November 15: Needles Loop B reservations end, the park's group sites close for the winter, and Loop B closes for the winter (the park doesn't give an exact date). Loop A stays open year-round.
- Monday, November 23, through December 30: Hans Flat Ranger Station is closed for the winter holidays.
- Thursday, November 26 (Thanksgiving): Island in the Sky Visitor Center is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and The Needles Visitor Center 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- From Sunday, November 29: Island in the Sky Visitor Center switches to winter hours, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
- From Sunday, December 6: The Needles Visitor Center closes for the winter. It reopens with early-spring hours on February 13, 2027.
- December 24 and 25: Island in the Sky Visitor Center closes early on Christmas Eve and is closed Christmas Day. The backcountry office is closed Christmas Day.
What this means for your trip
The muddy roads are the only alert that changes a plan right now, and they mostly affect people planning a high-clearance drive on the White Rim or a shortcut down the Mineral Bottom switchbacks. If that's you, the park's advice is to wait until the roads dry, so build a spare day into the trip and check the road conditions page before you commit. Everyone sticking to pavement at Island in the Sky or The Needles can ignore it.
In late June 2026 the Babylon Fire closed The Needles district for a stretch, and people still ask about it. The park isn't listing any Needles closure as of October 25, 2026, and the visitor center there is on normal late-fall hours. The Grand View Point lot work is also done for the year, so the end-of-the-road overlook at Island in the Sky isn't on the closure list.
Late fall is quieter, but the days are short and the visitor centers close at 4 p.m. If you're camping at Island in the Sky, there are only 12 sites and no reservations, so arrive early. The Needles is the better bet for a reservation, through November 15.
Earlier alerts (outdated)
- Outdated: reported by the park as of October 23, 2026; no longer listed as of October 25, 2026. Several Needles backcountry roads are still out after recent rain. The Beef Basin/Bridger Jack road (CR-107) is impassable and Cathedral Butte Trailhead can't be reached; the Colorado River Overlook Road is closed; Lavender Canyon is impassable at a deep creek crossing; and Lockhart Canyon is likely impassable. The paved road and the Elephant Hill access road are open, though parts of the access road are very slick and muddy. If it degrades to four-wheel-drive only, hikers can start the Elephant Hill trail from Loop A of The Needles Campground. (NPS, as of October 19)
- Outdated: reported by the park as of October 23, 2026; no longer listed as of October 25, 2026. Island in the Sky: the paved scenic drive is open. The Shafer Trail, Potash Road, and Mineral Bottom road are open, with high-clearance four-wheel drive recommended because of washboarding, mud, ruts, and washouts; Taylor Canyon and Lathrop roads are open to high-clearance four-wheel drive. The visitor center is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through October 24. (NPS road conditions; NPS hours)
- Outdated: reported by the park as of October 23, 2026; no longer listed as of October 25, 2026. The Needles: UT 211 and the main park road, including the campground loops, are open. NPS notes that recent storms filled some drainages along UT 211 between US 191 and Dugout, so watch for flooding. (NPS, as of October 19)
- Outdated: reported by the park as of October 23, 2026; no longer listed as of October 25, 2026. The Maze and Horseshoe Canyon: the road from Utah 24 to Hans Flat calls for high-clearance all-wheel drive with heavy washboarding, and the road from Utah 24 to Horseshoe Canyon is passable only to high-clearance four-wheel drive because of deep ruts and mud. The Flint Trail is open to high-clearance four-wheel drive. (NPS, as of October 16)
- Outdated: reported by the park as of October 23, 2026; no longer listed as of October 25, 2026. Fire restrictions were lifted on September 4. (NPS)
