Big Bend is a NO DRONE Zone; Bringing a Pet to Big Bend?

Checked November 5, 2026. See alerts and current conditions

Big Bend is about the size of Rhode Island and hours from anywhere, so a vague plan costs you real time. The Chisos Mountains, the desert, and the river are far apart, and water and shade are scarce.

Decide when you're going first, because heat rules out a lot of the year, then choose which part of the park fits your days. Everything I've written about Big Bend is collected below.

When to Go

Month by month, with what's open and whether the trip is worth it.

Camping

How to get a site, and what to do if you can't.

Wildlife and Plants

Where and when to look. Nothing here is guaranteed, so treat a sighting as a bonus.

With Kids

What works with children, where to stay, and what to skip.

Road Trips Through Big Bend
