Badlands National Park Alerts and Current Conditions
Last checked: October 25, 2026. This page tracks what's closed, what's changed, and what's coming up at Badlands National Park, South Dakota, from the park's alerts, news releases, and hours pages. I check it daily and rewrite it when the park posts something new. Late fall weather on the prairie can turn fast, and the park says winter storms can close its roads, so check the park's own alerts the morning you go.
Current alerts
- Notch Trail closure for ladder repairs. In a release dated August 31, the park announced it was closing the Notch Trail, and everything within 100 feet of it, to repair a section of the trail's ladder that had become a safety hazard. The release doesn't give a reopening date, so ask at the visitor center or check the release before you plan on it. (NPS)
- Don't trust GPS to find the park. The park warns against relying on digital navigation to get there. The Ben Reifel Visitor Center sits just off I-90 at 25216 Ben Reifel Road, Interior, SD 57750. (NPS)
Open and closed right now
- The park is open 24 hours a day, all year, except for weather closures. Entrance is $30 per private vehicle, good for seven days, and fees are collected year-round. (NPS)
- Ben Reifel Visitor Center: open daily, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on its winter schedule. It has the information desk, museum exhibits, the Fossil Preparation Lab, and the park bookstore.
- White River Visitor Center (South Unit, on the Pine Ridge Reservation): closed for the off-season.
- Cedar Pass Campground: listed as closed for the season since October 15, though the park says a limited section stays open in winter. Reservations go through Recreation.gov, and the campground is run by the park's concessioner, Aramark.
- Sage Creek Campground: open all year, free, first come, first served. It's primitive: pit toilets and covered picnic tables, no water. It's reached by the unpaved Sage Creek Rim Road, which can close after winter storms, and the road has limited turnarounds for big RVs.
Coming up in the next few weeks
- Thursday, November 26: the Ben Reifel Visitor Center is closed for Thanksgiving. It's also closed Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
- Winter roads: the park says roads through the Badlands may close in winter or in extreme weather and can be slick and icy. (NPS)
- Later reopenings: Cedar Pass Campground's full season is listed to start again April 1, 2027. Ben Reifel returns to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. summer hours on May 4, 2027, and the White River Visitor Center is listed as closed through May 22, 2027.
What this means for your trip
The Notch Trail is the one to watch. It's the park's best-known short scramble, with that log ladder up the side of a gully, and plenty of one-day plans are built around it. If it's still closed when you arrive, the Door and Window Trails leave from the same parking area, and neither one is mentioned in the closure notice. They're shorter and flatter, but they still put you right in the formations.
If you're heading to the South Unit, know that the White River Visitor Center is shut until late May, so pick up maps and ask questions at Ben Reifel first. Campers have a choice to make: the limited winter section at Cedar Pass, near the visitor center and the paved road, or free, waterless Sage Creek out on a gravel road that can turn bad after a storm. In late fall I'd lean toward Cedar Pass unless you're self-sufficient and watching the forecast.
Days are shorter now and the visitor center closes at 4, so get your questions answered early and plan the Badlands Loop Road drive with daylight to spare. Bring your own water; there's none at Sage Creek.
Earlier alerts (outdated)
- Outdated: reported by the park as of October 22, 2026; no longer listed as of October 25, 2026. Two entrance-fee-free days: October 27 (Theodore Roosevelt's birthday) and November 11 (Veterans Day). Admission is free on those days for U.S. citizens and residents. (NPS, as of October 22)
Before you go
- Check the park's current conditions and alerts the morning of your visit.
- Check road conditions on your route before you leave, as the park recommends, especially in winter. (NPS)
- Camping at Cedar Pass is reserved through Recreation.gov.
